We Leave a Mark

I found a stone
Large and heavy
Smooth and round
On the bank of the stream

The water sliding by
Was smooth like glass
Shiny and tempting me
To be disturbed

So I threw the rock
Into the stream
To hear the deep
“Kerplunk... kersploosh!!”

Column of water
Rose then fell
And pushed out
Rings in rings in rings in rings

They faded and flowed
Away with the current
And was smooth again
With no sign of the stone

Except the hole
In the dirt on the bank
Where it once sat
Watching the stream.
